A bleak picture has been painted of the mother of the Kahui twins, through defence witnesses at the murder trial of their father Chris Kahui today.
Kahui's lawyers say Macsyna King is the most likely killer.
Fiona King told the court her sister Macsyna initially blamed Chris Kahui for the deaths, but the same day said it was "a woman following her around" and then said the Maori word for ghost - "kehua".
A whanau support worker broke down in tears as she recalled Ms King being rough with her newborn twins, "dumping" one down in a hospital bassinet and "roughly" changing his nappy.
A cousin of Chris Kahui described an incident where Ms King banged the head of her older child against a door. Eugene Hetaraka told the court he was at another family member's house in 2005 before the twins were born, where Kahui was trying to comfort and feed his older son Shayne, who was then three-months-old.
He said Ms King came in in reeking of alcohol, yanked the baby out of his arms and stormed out a door "smacking" the baby's head on it as she went through. Mr Heteraka said Ms King was screaming at Kahui to get in the car, where she had "thrown" the baby and had not buckled him in.
