Byrnes steals the show

Sportal June 22, 2009, 1:03 pm

Heading into Round 12, if a clairvoyant would have told you that a Geelong player was going to be the top scorer for the upcoming week of AFL 09 Yahoo!7 Fantasy Sports Team action, the names Gary Ablett, Steve Johnson, Paul Chapman and Jimmy Bartel would naturally have come to mind.

But it was that super quartet's lesser-known team-mate Shannon Byrnes who stole the show this week with a stunning 203-point performance against Fremantle at Subiaco on Sunday.

Byrnes produced a match-winning effort which involved 26 disposals (nine contested), nine marks, five inside 50s and five critical goals to enhance his reputation as one of the more damaging small forwards in the competition in recent weeks.

That was Byrnes' third score of 125 or more in his past four outings but at an expensive $410,000, it's probably sensible to steer clear of him for now.

Luke Power was the other player to register a double-ton this week with a 202-pointer against Hawthorn in the first part of the round while resurgent Swan Ryan O'Keefe scored 199 against Collingwood on Saturday night.

The value performance of the round was manufactured by Fremantle youngster Greg Broughton.

Heading into Round 12, Broughton was worth only $180,600, but after his blistering 160 against Geelong on Sunday evening, he will now set you back $237,500.

Meanwhile, Leigh Montagna has joined Dane Swan as the joint-holder of the No.1 mantle on the total-points list thanks to his 177 points scored against Carlton way back in the opening match of the round.

Swan recorded 171 against Sydney and the pair now have a total score of 1869 each.

Johnson's (1852) radiant 183 sees him re-enter the top three at the expense of Bartel who is now fourth on 1834.

Our Round 12 Team of the Week is (points in brackets): *B:* Paul Duffield (165), Ryan Hargrave (145), Greg Broughton (160) *HB:* Michael Doughty (173), Brendon Goddard (147), Lindsay Gilbee (150) *C:* Leigh Montagna (177), Lenny Hayes (180), Matt Priddis (179) *HF:* Ryan O'Keefe (199), Nick Riewoldt (183), Alan Didak (194) *F:* Shannon Byrnes (203), Mitch Morton (193), Steve Johnson (183) *R:* Will Minson (143), Dane Swan (171), Luke Power (202) *I:* Paul Chapman (180), Joel Corey (171), Corey Enright (140), Aaron Sandilands (133)
