Ponting expects double trouble

Australian captain Ricky Ponting is expecting England to play two spinners in the first Test in Cardiff.

The prospect of such a scenario rose on Monday following the announcement of England's 16-man pre-Ashes training squad, which contained three spinners Graeme Swann, Monty Panesar and Adil Rashid.

Left-armer Panesar and uncapped 21-year-old leggie Rashid will be vying for the second spinner's berth should English selectors decide to unleash two tweakers on a Cardiff wicket expected to take turn.

"Everything I'm hearing from the wicket down there indicates that they could do that," Ponting said.

Ponting said the likelihood of facing English spin twins in Cardiff would more than likely hinge on the fitness of all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who is on the comeback trail from knee surgery.

"If they play two spinners they'll want him to be their third quick bowler, I'd imagine," he said.

Although Panesar was named in England's side to face Warwickshire in a three-day game at Edgbaston starting on July 1, he is considered far from over the line as the country's No.2 spinner behind Swann.

Rashid, a product of the spin program set up by Shane Warne's former mentor Terry Jenner, was highly impressive in the recently-completed ICC World Twenty20.

Australia, so used to enjoying an advantage in the spin stakes over England courtesy of Warne, has only one spinner in its travelling party - Nathan Hauritz.

Ponting said his team was not daunted by the prospect of playing on a turning wicket.

"I think our record in the subcontinent will hold us in good stead there," he said.

"We're very proud of the way we've performed in all conditions around the world."
