The West Australian June 20, 2009, 1:15 pm

George Williams, the father of underworld boss Carl Williams, has been released from prison in Victoria.

Williams left Barwon Prison, near Geelong, just after 7am (AEST) on Saturday, the prison's operations manager Phil Armstrong said.

The 62-year-old was picked up at the high security prison by a male friend and driven away.

Williams, dressed in shorts, runners and a Collingwood jacket, did not speak to a waiting media scrum.

He was jailed in November 2007 for four-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to teaming up with Carl to Traffic 4.79kg of amphetamines.

He was paroled for good behaviour after serving 20 months, but his health is reported to have deteriorated.

When Williams entered prison he had severe heart problems and diabetes besides suffering anxiety and depression.

He was given day release from prison in November 2008 to attend the funeral of his estranged wife Barbara, who was found dead in her Essendon home after an apparent drug overdose.

Williams served time at a low security prison farm before voluntarily moving to Barwon Prison to be with his son.

Carl Williams is serving a 35-year minimum jail term over the murders of three underworld rivals.
