Cricket great's son faces charges over football clash

The West Australian June 24, 2009, 1:15 pm

The son of Test cricket great David Boon could face assault charges over an on-field clash during an Australian Rules match in Tasmania.

North Hobart's Daniel Newitt had his nose broken in a collision with Clarence player Jack Boon, the cricketer's son, during a Tasmanian State League match last month.

Boon was not reported by the match umpire and after reviewing footage of the clash AFL Tasmania decided against referring the matter to the league's tribunal.

Newitt says his only option after the league failed to act was to make a complaint to police about Boon.

"AFL Tasmania didn't deal with the problem at hand to start with, that's pretty much it really," Newitt told ABC television on Tuesday.

"If he had gone to the tribunal and if he didn't get weeks or if he did get two weeks for it, or whatever, it wouldn't really bother me but it didn't go to the tribunal so I felt like I had to take it into my own hands."

AFL Tasmania deemed that Boon was attempting to tackle and Newitt had slipped.

It says the matter is closed.
