NSW Swifts mentor to coach world team

The West Australian June 26, 2009, 1:00 pm

NSW Swifts mentor Julie Fitzgerald will coach a World Seven team to play the Silver Ferns in a three-Test netball series in August.

The squad of 11 includes Australian quartet Peta Scholz, Natasha Chokljat, Delmeza McCloud and Megan Dehn.

The team is predominantly a combination of Australian, English and Jamaican players.

Lisa Alexander of the Adelaide Thunderbirds will be Fitzgerald's assistant coach.

Eight of the team have been playing in the trans-Tasman netball league.

Fitzgerald said the World Seven team was a great concept.

"I'm excited and eager to take up the challenge of working with such a variety of talented netballers," she said.

"It's not every day that a coach gets to learn from and mould together all the different styles of netball from around the world."

The games are scheduled for Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland on August 24, 26 and 29. The Silver Ferns then travel to Australia for a three-Test series from September 6 to 13 before returning to New Zealand for two Tests against Australia in Invercargill and Auckland on September 20 and 23.

The Silver Ferns squad is scheduled to be named at the end of the trans-Tasman league, with the Test side selected after trials in Wellington on August 19 to 21.

The World Seven team is: Simone Forbes (Jamaica), Louisa Brownfield (England), Peta Scholz (Australia), Frances Solia (Samoa), Geva Mentor (England), Sonia Mkoloma (England), Althea Byfield (Jamaica), Natasha Chokljat (Australia), Delmeza McCloud (Australia), Tamsin Greenway (England), Megan Dehn (Australia).
