Real Madrid have officially signed Cristiano Ronaldo on a six-year contract from Manchester United in a deal worth a world record £80 million ($A162.3 million), the Spanish giants announced on Friday.

The Portugal international is set to earn £11 million ($A22 million) a year with Real, making him the highest-paid player in the world. The current top earner is understood to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is on about £10m per year.

A statement on the official website of Real Madrid said: "Real Madrid CF and Manchester United have signed the definitive agreement for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Spanish club on 1 July.

"The player will stay at Real Madrid for six seasons."

The 24-year-old had been on around £9.5 million ($A19.34 million) a year at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo will officially become a Real player on July 1 and is set to be unveiled by the nine-time European champions on Monday July 6.
