Perry holds onto lead as storm halts US PGA event

The West Australian June 27, 2009, 12:30 pm

US Masters runner-up Kenny Perry fired a two-under par 68 on Friday to maintain a two-stroke lead when play was halted by thunderstorms in the second round of the PGA Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

The US veteran, who opened with a sizzling 61 on Thursday, stood on 11-under par 129 through 36 holes with countryman Ryan Moore second in the clubhouse on 131 after a 65 overnight.

Americans Aaron Watkins and Colt Knost shared third on eight-under 132 with four others on the course at eight-under when play was stopped.

In all, 72 others were on the back nine of round two when play was suspended for the day.

Players will return to complete the second round Saturday morning.

Perry led Americans Paul Goydos and Charles Warren by two strokes after Thursday's opening round.

Perry's nearest rivals still on the course were Americans Goydos, Anthony Kim and David Toms at eight-under - all with five holes remaining to finish - and Spencer Levin, who had nine holes remaining in his second round.

Matthew Goggin was the best placed Australian at six under par.
