England to play Germany in Euro U21 final

The West Australian June 27, 2009, 12:45 pm

England's under-21s have reached the final of European Football Championships after a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over hosts Sweden in Gothenburg.

Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs scored the winning spot kick after the teams were tied 3-3 after extra time.

England, who had Frazier Campbell sent off, will meet Germany in Monday's final in Malmo after they beat Italy 1-0.

Sweden rallied from three goals down at half-time to force the shoot-out.

Southampton's Martin Cranie scored just 53 seconds in to give England a 1-0 lead that silenced the sell-out crowd of 16,385 at Gamla Ullevi Stadium.

Manchester City midfielder Nedum Onuoha doubled the lead in the 27th followed by an own goal by Mattias Bjarsmyr in the 38th minute.

Marcus Berg started the comeback for Sweden in the 68th, Ola Toivonen curled in a free kick in the 75th, and Berg's second and tournament-record seventh levelled the scores.
