Jackson family 'devastated by tragedy'

The West Australian June 28, 2009, 1:00 pm

Michael Jackson's grieving family spoke of their "devastation" on Saturday in a heart-wrenching first full statement since the pop superstar's death.

In a statement conveyed by Jackson's father Joseph to People magazine, the family described the music legend's death as "one of the darkest moments of our lives" and thanked the singer's fans for their messages of support.

"Our beloved son, brother and father of three children has gone so unexpectedly, in such a tragic way and much too soon," the statement said.

"It leaves us, his family, speechless and devastated to a point, where communication with the outside world seems almost impossible at times.

"We miss Michael endlessly, our pain cannot be described in words. But Michael would not want us to give up now. So we want to thank all of his faithful supporters and loyal fans worldwide, you - who Michael loved so much."

Jackson's family has been huddled at their estate in Encino since the star's death on Thursday. Fans from around the world have visited the estate over the past two days, creating a makeshift shrine of flowers, cards and candles outside the property in tribute.

Associates of the Jacksons said earlier on Saturday the clan was growing frustrated at unanswered questions surrounding the death.

However, the family urged Jackson's fans not to despair "because Michael will continue to live on in each and every one of you."

"Continue to spread his message, because that is what he would want you to do. Carry on, so his legacy will live forever," the statement said.

In an additional statement, Joseph Jackson said the star's three children were "deeply moved by all the love and support you have shown for them and their father."
