Canadian kills women, feeds them to pigs

The West Australian June 28, 2009, 1:45 pm

A Canadian farmer convicted of butchering women and feeding them to his pigs, who police say was the country's worst serial killer, will appeal his conviction, his lawyer said on Saturday.

Robert Pickton's lawyer Gil McKinnon said he will ask Canada's Supreme Court to decide if the former pig farmer had a fair trial.

Earlier this week, the British Columbia Court of Appeal in a split decision rejected Pickton's lawyer's arguments that the trial judge erred in his instructions.

The split decision grants Pickton, convicted of six murders in 2007, the automatic right to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.

Pickton, 59, is serving life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

Pickton was arrested in February 2002 by police investigating the disappearances of sex trade workers from Vancouver's seedy Downtown Eastside and charged with 26 counts of first-degree murder.

During his 11-month long trial, the judge decided to break the case into two parts, with six counts heard first and 20 counts to be heard later.

Pickton and his brother used to throw parties at the hog farm in a barn they dubbed the "Piggy Palace." Investigators have said they were drunken parties with prostitutes and plenty of drugs.

At his trial, investigators testified that they found body parts, blood samples and bone fragments along with the severed heads of three women on Pickton's farm.

A prosecution witness testified she walked in on a blood-covered Pickton as a woman's body dangled from a chain in the farm's slaughterhouse.

Pickton's lawyer expects the appeal will be heard in the early spring of 2010.
