Spies claims Donnington double

America's Ben Spies secured a double success in the ninth round of the Superbike World Championship at Donnington Park in England.

The Yamaha rider's victories closed the 48-point gap at the top of the table to just 14, with championship leader Noriyuki Haga of Japan crashing out on his Ducati Xerox in race two and sustaining a broken vetebrae in the process.

Britain's Leon Haslam finished second in race two, more than six seconds behind the Texan with Michel Fabrizio of Italy in third.

In the first race, Spies finished more than seven seconds ahead of Italy's Max Biagi and over 10 seconds in front of Haga.

Australian former world champion Troy Corser was forced to retire from race one after 21 laps and finished way down the field in 20th on his BMW in race two.

Broc James finished in 18th position in race one and 14th in race two on his Kawasaki.

Haga still tops the overall stadings with 308 points with Spies on 294 one place ahead of Ducati's Fabrizio on 257.

Corser sits in 17th place on 36 points one place ahead on James on 27.
