Sony to adapt Risk for big screen

Gregg Kilday, Reuters November 5, 2009, 9:22 pm

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Sony Pictures is taking on some Risk, acquiring the film rights to the classic Hasbro board game, in which players vie for world domination.

The game was invented in 1957 by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse under the title La Conquete du Monde (The Conquest of the World). Two years later, Parker Brothers published the game in the U.S. as Risk. According to Hasbro, Risk was the first board game to offer nonlinear movement as players compete on a map of the world by amassing armies and conquering territory.

The film will be produced and developed by executives from Hasbro and Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment company.

Hasbro's Transformers and G.I. Joe have already enjoyed big-screen success. Separately, Hasbro has a deal with Universal Pictures for as many as four movies with titles such as "Battleship" currently in active development.
