Air New Zealand has acknowledged "gaps and failings" in its handling of the Erebus tragedy, almost 30 years ago.
The airline has written to families of the 257 people who died when a DC-10 crashed into Mt Erebus, during a sightseeing flight to Antarctica.
Chief executive Rob Fyfe says the airline has learned a lot since the tragedy. He says the experience he gained handling the Airbus crash at Perpignan last year caused him to reflect on Erebus.
Air New Zealand has stopped short of promising a public apology, although it is expected there will be one at the unveiling of a sculpture at the airline's head office this week.
