Shots have been fired at a patrol from the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan.
The New Zealanders were attacked by a group of insurgents using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in the Bamyan Province.
There are no New Zealand casualties.
The Defence Force says the New Zealanders were engaged on more than one occasion throughout the incident and returned fire.
Two coalition helicopter gunships were called in and they engaged the insurgents and the reconstruction team were able to move to a safe location
During the attack two vehicles suffered minor damage.
