A 38-year-old man has been taken to Rotorua Hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Ambulance staff were called to Murupara, southeast of Rotorua, at 5pm.
Police said they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident but were unlikely to know exactly what had happened until they could speak with the man -- possibly tomorrow.
