Govt promises energy efficient offices

AAP November 8, 2009, 1:19 pm

The federal government says it is on the way to ensuring all of its office buildings have five-star greenhouse ratings.

Labor hasn't delivered on an election promise to run Parliament House and MPs' electoral offices on clean energy, Fairfax reported on Sunday.

Nor has it upgraded all government office buildings to minimum five-star greenhouse ratings.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett admitted the job wasn't done yet, but said Labor was well on the way to meeting those commitments.

"We are well on the way to getting this work done," he told Network Ten.

Mr Garrett said the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts in Canberra was 100 per cent renewable energy efficient.

About 10 per cent of the approximately 160 government buildings around the country had a "renewable energy component".

"We want to see that go further," Mr Garrett said.

He also stressed an Interdepartmental Committee on Government Leadership in Sustainability had been established.

So far the committee, which was scheduled to report to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd by June 2008, has been silent.
