Govt to install Crown Observer at council

Newstalk ZB Updated January 27, 2012, 6:08 pm

The Government is installing a Crown Observer at the Christchurch City Council and CEO Tony Marryatt is turning down his $68,000 pay rise.

The announcements have come following an hour-long meeting between Ministers Nick Smith and Gerry Brownlee, and warring councillors.

The Crown Observer will be Kerry Marshall, a previous President of Local Government New Zealand.

He will start the job on Monday.

Mayor Bob Parker has voiced his support for the move, saying councillors have lost trust and need external help.

Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt has instructed the council’s payroll office to stop paying him his salary increase from today following negative publicity and antagonistic public reaction.

Mr Marryatt says that's made it tough for staff and has the potential to distract the council from the important task of rebuilding Christchurch.

He says he wants to show his commitment to Christchurch, to the council and to its staff as he leads the team through the rebuild.

Mayor Bob Parker is pleased at Mr Marryatt's decision.

"I think that is a tremendous gesture of faith and belief in the council and our desire to work together and I thank him for doing that."

And who will observe the observer, will he/she be so independent that they have no one they are answerable to thus furthering the nest feathering activities in Christchurch. Must have been short a job for the boys and girls.
