There are reports that deaf MP Mojo Mathers has been told she must pay for the $30,000 technology she needs to speak in Parliament.

Stuff is reporting that Speaker Lockwood Smith has told the Green Party list MP that the money must come out of her own budget.

Mathers made history last year by becoming the first profoundly deaf MP.

The Green MP was prevented from speaking in Parliament last week because certain technology isn't in place.

Sign language is New Zealand's third official language.
