Angry backlash over use of 'n*****' in film review

Angry backlash over taboo review

A New Zealand publisher has backed one of its authors after a film review that contained an uncensored derogatory term for African-Americans generated public backlash.

The short review about the film Dope, published on the Rip It Up website and written by one of the magazine's editors, used the taboo term 'n*****' frequently to describe African-American stereotypes.

It appears six times in the piece, including the headline.

Publisher Grant Hislop said the intention of the reviewer was to raise issues that the film explores as well as exploring the taboo that surrounds the word.

"We recognise that the intentions of the article have been misconstrued and taken out of context and apologise for any offence caused."

"The writer is not bigoted and is in fact an avid promoter of equality in all areas of our community."
