School support staff meet over pay dispute

NZPA November 4, 2009, 4:19 pm

School support staff are attending union meetings to consider their next move in stalled pay negotiations.

The collective agreement for support staff, which includes teacher aides, librarians, officers managers and therapists, expired on March 1.

Negotiations with the Education Ministry had made "no progress", New Zealand Educational Institute national executive member Gaye Parlane said.

"Their fight for better pay is based on the value of the work they do and the improvements they make to children's learning," she said.

"They are a frontline and skilled workforce but many are paid as little as $12.94 an hour."

Ms Parlane said union meetings were "critical" and some staff would have "big decisions to make" if the standoff continued.
