Two people trying to bring peace between gangs in the Bay of Plenty township of Murupara are being warned by police to be very careful.
Activist Tame Iti and Tribesmen gang leader Peter Hunt are apparently trying to help broker a truce, after the gang-related deaths of two local teenagers this year.
Jordan Herewini and Kaine Lewis died in separate violent incidents.
Police Association president Greg O'Connor says when gangs fight it is normally about turf, and who gets to commit crime in a particular area.
He says anyone who gets drawn in to the situation needs to be aware they may actually be helping the gangs.
Greg O'Connor says he does not know what is motivating the men to get involved.
