PM defends ACT leader over perks

Newstalk ZB November 8, 2009, 10:11 am

The Prime Minister has been obliged to defend Rodney Hide again, over his use of parliamentary perks.

The ACT Party leader has agreed to front media questions this afternoon, over a holiday in Hawaii with his girlfriend.

It is a further embarrassment for John Key, who has already had to explain Mr Hide's Europe and USA excursion, on the taxpayer.

This morning, John Key told TVNZ's Q&A programme that MPs from across the house have been making the best of their travel allowances.

He says the situation says more about the system of perks, than about individual MPs themselves.

He says he has told parliamentarians they are living in a much more transparent environment now, which means more scrutiny of what they do.

Mr Key is confident Rodney Hide does still have a mandate to be critical of spending in the public sector, despite the past week's revelations.
