Queenstown police have released the name of a man fell to his death while rock climbing on Chinaman's Bluff. He was Matthew Allison from Wanaka.

The 26 year old was a British National who had been in New Zealand since February this year and was an experienced climber who had previously traversed the Bluff.

Mr Allison was with a climbing companion on Friday when a rope became entangled as they were making their way down a cliff face. While trying to free it, he fell 155 metres down the cliff.

Police have finished their investigation and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
