Paintings by Picasso, Dali, Matisse, Derain and Braque arrived in Auckland today and will go on display tomorrow.

The five works are the first of 15 gifted by New York collectors Julian and Josie Robertson for display at the Auckland Art Gallery.

"This is the most valuable and prestigious gift ever made to an art museum in Australasia," Auckland mayor John Banks said.

"The art represents some of the major European artists of the modern era."
