More than $150,000 has been raised for breast cancer research at an exhibition combining art and music.

The Art for a Cure exhibition , held at Auckland's Hopetoun Alpha, featured artwork inspired by a New Zealand song, or particular lyric, and visitors viewed the pieces while listening to the music on provided MP3 players.

Along with the artworks, a collection of limited edition sculptures were also sold at an auction.

Curator Paul Baragwanath said it had been a privilege to be part of the project.

"It was an absolutely unique concept that created an exhibition of exceptional work, igniting the imagination of artists and the viewing public alike."

Breast Cancer Research Trust chief executive Tony Moffatt said he was thrilled with the results.

"This exhibition would not have happened without the artists and musicians who have given us nothing but positive feedback about how this was run and the goal of the trust."
