American accused of cocaine smuggling
An American man accused of swallowing 62 pellets of cocaine to smuggle the drug from Chile to New Zealand has appeared in court.
Mark Henderson, 41, was stopped by Customs on arrival at Auckland Airport on Tuesday.
Customs says he admitted to being a drug courier during a search of his luggage, and airport staff found some of the pellets he had already passed.
Henderson was allegedly carrying about 1.3kg of the drug inside his body.
He was charged with importing a Class A drug and appeared in Auckland District Court on Thursday, where he was remanded in custody to re-appear on Friday, Fairfax reports.
Officials have warned of the dangers of smugglers ingesting drugs.
Colombian woman Sorlinda Vega died in Auckland Hospital in September last year after a package of cocaine burst inside her.
A post-mortem found she was carrying more than 20 packages of cocaine worth $120,000 to $190,000.The world in pictures
