Jayne Furlong's mother realised soon after her daughter went missing that she wouldn't be found alive.
Judith Furlong eventually moved on with her life until the shock discovery of Jayne's skeleton found after 19 years brought the trauma back, as if it had happened yesterday.
"I was very surprised. I never thought this day would come really," she told media in Auckland on Thursday.
Police have confirmed Jayne's body was found buried in sand dunes at Port Waikato last month.
They say the 17-year-old, who was a prostitute and last seen on Auckland's Karangahape Rd in May 1993, was killed.
The investigation launched when she went missing is being revisited.
Police still don't yet know how she died and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
"We need information from anyone who, over the past 19 years, has been living with the knowledge that Jayne was killed and buried in a lonely and cold sandy grave," Detective Inspector Mark Benefield said.
The day after she went missing in 1993, she was due to testify at the trial of Stephen Collie, who was later found guilty of sexual offences against seven prostitutes and jailed for 16 years.
She was also a witness in another gang-related murder trial.
Jayne's mother said she never thought her daughter would be found alive.
"I realised fairly soon after she disappeared she wouldn't be alive, she would have contacted us," Mrs Furlong said.
She described Jayne as a "vivacious girl".
"But she was just a girl, really. And a bit crazy."
Mrs Furlong said that she had, in a way, moved on since her daughter's disappearance.
"But this has thrown it all back, like 19 years haven't passed and I remember everything like it was yesterday."
Now that Miss Furlong's body has been found, Mrs Furlong said she would like to see someone brought to justice over her daughter's death."No one has the right to take someone else's life."
