A man is facing court charges after removing a child he cares for from hospital, where he was being treated for burns.

The child was in Middlemore Hospital in Auckland after suffering burns in a house fire when his caregiver removed him from the hospital on Sunday.

He has since appeared in Manukau District Court charged with removing the three-year-old boy from a place of care and putting him at risk of infection, Fairfax reports.

Hospital spokeswoman Lauren Young said the child was now safe and back in hospital.

The boy is now in Child, Youth and Family care.
