The death of a newborn baby at Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua last month will be investigated by the Health and Disability Commissioner.
The Health Minister has already ordered a review of maternity care in Wellington, prompted by a complaint from a local public health physician about the actions of two independent midwives during the birth.
Dr Ate Moala is alleging the death could have been prevented had the midwives called an obstetrician earlier, but the Midwifery Council says there is no evidence to support that claim. It says allegations of widespread midwifery incompetence are both untrue and misleading.
Health and Disability Commissioner Ron Paterson says no formal complaint has been laid with him but he will investigate the incident.
