Faulty light fitting sparked fatal Karaka barn fire

NZPA November 4, 2009, 6:47 pm

A south Auckland man died after apparently going to investigate a barn fire caused by a faulty light fitting, police say.

The dead man has not yet been named and a forensic dentist will examine the body tomorrow to provide a positive identification.

Police and fire safety officers today completed their scene examination at a rural property at Karaka, about 10km southwest of Papakura.

They established that the cause of yesterday's fire was an electrical fault in a light fitting.

Firefighters battled exploding gas cylinders and a lack of water to fight the massive fire, which started just before 4pm.

They later discovered the man's body inside. "It would appear that the deceased has gone to the building, probably as a result of noticing the fire," a police spokesman said.

There were no suspicious circumstances and the man's death would be referred to the coroner.
