A public fireworks display turned into a bit of a nightmare in Whakatane last night.
Some of the fireworks being let off on the Whakatane Spit set off blazes in surrounding scrub.
One person was taken to hospital, but their condition is not known.
It is reported a vehicle was set alight as well.
Firefighters could not get to the seat of the fire to put it out, and it was left to burn itself out.
