Work on a film about Megaupload founder and internet piracy accused Kim Dotcom is under way and a Kiwi filmmaker is involved in its production.

The documentary, with the working title Mega Conspiracy, is to be co-produced by actor-producer Donovan Leitch and Dotcom's friend and associate Alex Mardikian.

New Zealander Fergus Milner is also involved in producing the film.

Mardikian told the Hollywood Reporter about 60 hours of interviews have already been shot.

In addition to interviews with Dotcom, the film's producers have spoken with his co-accused, Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk and Finn Batato.

The documentary will explore the US government's case against Megaupload, as well as issues of content ownership, Leitch said.

"Kim is part of the story, but we want to tell the whole story," he said.

The co-producers are yet to confirm who will direct the film, but talks are under way with Emmy nominee Marc Levin.

Meanwhile, journalist Neil Strauss, a former New York Times music writer, is said to be working on a biography of Dotcom.

Dotcom, 38, is currently on bail in New Zealand awaiting extradition to the US, where he faces charges of racketeering, copyright infringement and money laundering in relation to the Megaupload site.

He and his three co-accused were arrested on January 20 in a police raid on Dotcom's $30 million rented mansion in Coatesville, north of Auckland.

The extradition hearing is set down for August.
