Ex-RSA leader fined after medal fraud
A former Returned Services' Association local president has been fined $500 for wearing medals he hadn't earned.
Don Moselen, the former president of the RSA in Otaki, was sentenced in Levin District Court on Tuesday.
Moselen last month admitted a charge under the 1918 Military Decorations and Distinctive Badges Act for wearing war medals he knew he wasn't entitled to.
Moselen wore the New Zealand Operational Service Medal, The Vietnam Medal and the New Zealand General Service Medal at Anzac Day services.
Judge Gerard Lynch said the case showed it was time to revise the penalty for the offence under the 1918 Act, Fairfax reported.
Moselen has denied an additional charge of dishonestly using a cheque belonging to the Otaki RSA.
He has been remanded to appear on that charge on August 1.
