Lawyers plan to lodge an appeal for a 26-year-old bouncer convicted of the murder of a New Zealander who was pushed to his death through a second-storey pub window in Perth.

The lawyers told a hearing in Perth's Supreme Court on Thursday they intended to appeal Stefan Schmidt's conviction.

Late on Wednesday a jury found Schmidt guilty of killing Andrew Marshall, 29, by pushing him through the window of the Ocean Beach Hotel in the coastal suburb of Cottesloe in May 2011.

Schmidt, who faces a possible life sentence, had instructed his lawyers to lodge an appeal.

He will be sentenced in September.

Mr Marshall was a cousin of slain Manawatu farmer Scott Guy. The trial of Mr Guy's brother-in-law Ewen Macdonald for murder is continuing in the Wellington High Court.

Mr Marshall's family travelled from New Zealand to Perth for the trial.

His father Alan said they sought answers about their son's final hours and death, and to honour their treasured family member.
