Greens send themselves up over probes

NZ Newswire July 5, 2012, 5:44 pm

Proving it has the ability to laugh at itself, the Green Party - which has called for numerous inquiries, reviews and investigations into an array of issues this year - is now calling for an independent inquiry into why it calls for so many inquiries.

The party was recently mocked by Prime Minister John Key, who said the Greens call for an inquiry into "virtually everything".

So with tongue firmly in cheek, the Greens on Thursday announced it would convene a working group to determine the make up of a gender-balanced inquiry committee to decide its terms of reference - poking fun at the Greens' inclusion of all party members to decide nearly everything within the party.

If the inquiry's findings were ignored, a subsequent inquiry would be held to find out why.

The Greens say the inquiry will not be headed by Paula Rebstock or Dame Margaret Bazley, who have headed numerous government inquiries and working groups.

On a serious note, the party hit back at Mr Key's comments - which came after the Greens called for an inquiry into the police raid on piracy accused Kim Dotcom's mansion, after the High Court ruled it was illegal.

"It's sort of the boy who cried wolf a few too many times I think," Mr Key said.

The Greens pointed out they had previously obtained inquiries into matters including the ACC privacy breach, the government's convention centre deal with SkyCity, fracking and milk prices, saying "every time the Green Party cries wolf it turns out there is one".
