The body of a 26-year-old man has been recovered from the base of a popular rock-climbing area in the Dart River Valley north of Glenorchy.
Police had been alerted just before midnight that two climbers were overdue. A search and rescue operation was launched, mainly by trying to call out to the men during the night, then beginning an aerial and ground search when it got light. The dead man was found just before 8.30 this morning at the bottom of the cliff known as Chinaman's Bluff.
His climbing companion was airlifted unhurt from a ledge 200 metres up from the base of the cliff, where he had spent the night.
