Disgruntled rugby fans to get answers

Rugby fans caught up in public transport chaos before the opening of the Rugby World Cup may learn on Wednesday why they missed out.

About 2000 ticket holders missed the opening ceremony and kick-off of the first game because of train delays.

A report into the chaos will be released on Wednesday at the Auckland City Council.

On Monday, 56 people who missed out had registered with Auckland Transport via its website or phone line.

The organisation is taking details in a step towards giving people some sort of compensation.

Veolia Transport Auckland is reviewing Friday's events.

Auckland Transport has asked it to look at issues including on-board security, train ventilation, passenger health and safety, its response to problems, customer communication and putting on extra buses.

Veolia said on Monday:

  • It planned for 30,000 people, but 60,000 used the trains.

  • Auckland Transport had approved its plan.

  • Problems arose from Friday morning with unprecedented numbers of passengers.

  • In the afternoon delays were also caused by people trying to ride on the outside of trains, board moving trains, pressing the emergency stop button and being on the tracks.

  • All of Veolia's 148 available carriages were in use.

  • It put on back-up buses after problems arose.

  • The company does not expect the same demand again during the RWC.

About 200,000 packed Auckland's waterfront on Friday and 60,000 headed to Eden Park.
