More than 1000 people, including Prime Minister John Key, attended a funeral for Wellington businessman Lloyd Morrison.
Mr Morrison died of leukaemia, aged 54, this month at a cancer treatment centre in Seattle, United States.
Mr Morrison established the NZX-listed specialist infrastructure owner Infratil in 1988 and remained a director until his death.
He had actively supported changing the national flag, and played a significant role in rescuing the Wellington Phoenix football franchise.
Mr Key gave a eulogy at the funeral at Wellington Town Hall on Friday, and described Mr Morrison as a "very passionate man" with strong views he was willing to share.
He said the pair had nearly got into a fist fight at a bar in Wellington over economic policy.
A video recording from Mr Morrison was also played at the funeral, Fairfax reported.
"I've had a really good life, it's not my choice that it's a funeral today but the only thing to do is celebrate, so this is my request to everyone here today - that this is a happy day," he said.
