Otago police have released the name of a young woman found dead at a jetty in the industrial area of Balclutha.

She is 21-year-old Amberley Rose Findlay, from the small Otago town of Kaitangata, police said on Saturday night.

Her body was found on the bank of the Clutha River about 9am on Friday by someone working nearby.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Saturday, and police have scaled down their investigation.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

The area around the riverside jetty is a popular spot with Balclutha's young people, who use the area for socialising or swimming in the lagoon nearby.
