SkyCity's former chief operating officer has resigned after being convicted for refusing to give a blood sample to police over drink driving.

SkyCity notified the Department of Internal Affairs of Stuart Wing's resignation on Friday - the same day Mr Wing pleaded guilty to the charge in the Manukau District Court.

Grainne Troute, general manager of group services, said in a statement that Mr Wing had chosen to return to Australia for "personal reasons".

"We are not prepared to discuss any individual employee's specific circumstances," she said.

"This would be a breach of trust and confidentiality."

"That said, given the drink driving charge is a matter of public record we confirm that we did advise our regulator, the Department of Internal Affairs on Friday, the day Mr Wing appeared in court."

Ms Troute said the charge related to an incident that happened outside of Auckland and while Mr Wing wasn't working.

Mr Wing does not hold any liquor or gaming licence for SkyCity. These are held by SkyCity Auckland Limited, she said.

Ms Troute said Mr Wing, who joined SkyCity early last year, had made a very significant impact on the performance of the company.
