Murray Toleafoa has made his first court appearance facing a charge of attempting to murder a policeman.

Toleafoa appeared in Auckland District Court on Wednesday, a day after being arrested in a downtown Auckland supermarket car park following four days on the run.

He had been wanted by police after allegedly firing at a policeman from close range in a car outside the Primo club on Mayoral Drive in central Auckland early on Friday before fleeing the scene.

The officer was not hit but suffered burns after the shot.

Toleafoa, 30, wore a blue jumpsuit and looked around the public gallery acknowledging friends, Radio Live reported.

His lawyer Ron Mansfield told the court his client would deny the attempted murder charge.

Toleafoa, who is also charged with unlawful use of a firearm, will reappear on July 4.

Nadia Bell, who police say drove the car from which Toleafoa fired at the policeman, appeared in Auckland District Court on Monday charged as a party to the unlawful possession of a pistol.
