Quake jolts Canterbury

NZ Newswire July 6, 2012, 4:15 pm

A shallow 4.8-magnitude earthquake has rattled Canterbury.

The GeoNet website reported the intensity of the shake, centred 30 kilometres west of Christchurch at a depth of 11km, as strong.

It struck at 3.29pm on Friday and was felt across the region and as far south as Dunedin.

The tremor prompted a flurry of activity on social media sites but St John Ambulance said there were no injuries reported to it.
