A shallow 4.8-magnitude earthquake has rattled Canterbury.
The GeoNet website reported the intensity of the shake, centred 30 kilometres west of Christchurch at a depth of 11km, as strong.
It struck at 3.29pm on Friday and was felt across the region and as far south as Dunedin.
The tremor prompted a flurry of activity on social media sites but St John Ambulance said there were no injuries reported to it.
