A man's body has been found in a drain in rural southern Hawke's Bay, but police say he is believed to have died of natural causes.

The body was found just after midday on Thursday at Matamau, nearly 10km north of Dannevirke, a police central communications spokesman said.

It appeared from initial reports the man may have been in his late 60s and he appeared to have died of natural causes.

Police did not yet know how he came to be in the drain.
