$1.1m spent on scrapped expressway

NZ Newswire July 17, 2012, 4:19 pm

The government is defending spending more than $1 million designing a road that won't be built.

The Transport Agency (NZTA) announced last week plans for a four-lane Otaki to Levin expressway had been scrapped and instead the existing road would be upgraded.

Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee confirmed in parliament on Tuesday $1.1m was spent on investigation, design and preparatory work for the expressway.

"This work led NZTA to a decision to improve safety on the road and delay expenditure on the four-lane expressway, and I think that's money well spent," he said.
