One person is dead and three are injured, two seriously, after a two-car collision in the Coromandel District.

Emergency services were called just before 3pm on Sunday to the crash on State Highway 25A, between Thames and Pauanui.

An ambulance spokeswoman says one person was found deceased and three others needed to be airlifted to hospital.

One person with serious injuries was headed to Auckland Hospital, while a second helicopter heading to Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland had one seriously injured and one moderately injured person on board.

Fire service equipment was needed to extricate two people from cars at the scene.
