Smoking commuter ferry returns safely
Passengers on a commuter ferry caught in the middle of an emergency callout have made it safely to shore.
Emergency services were called shortly after 6pm after reports of a smoking engine on the 360 Discovery ferry from downtown Auckland to Gulf Harbour.
Ferry spokeswoman Lucy Farrington said reports of a fire were incorrect.
"There was steam coming off the engine as a result of a mechanical issue and staff followed emergency procedure," Ms Farrington told NZ Newswire.
The ferry, carrying 57 passengers and three crew, was escorted to Gulf Harbour by the navy vessel Manawanui and the police launch Deodar.
The ferry made it to Gulf Harbour by 6.45pm and nobody was injured.
Ms Farrington said a full investigation would take place.The world in pictures
