If you're one of thousands of people who've deliberately driven their car through floodwaters you might want to think again next time.

With the storm season rapidly approaching, authorities have shown the potentially tragic consequences of becoming trapped.

SES flood rescue trainer David King says it's tough and it's definitely dangerous.

“As soon as our volunteers enter that floodwater they're putting their life on the line,” King says.

In the last year State Emergency Services volunteers have done 400 flood rescues.

Many have been to save people who drove into floodwaters, and sadly for some it was a fatal decision.

For those who do get washed away their only chance can be some split second timing.

Authorities are concerned that the safety messages aren't getting through, with new research showing 40 percent of people admitted intentionally going into floodwaters.

The state's storm season officially starts next week.
