A seven-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a car in Porirua not far from his school.
The boy was walking about 3.15pm, shortly after the day had finished at Cannons Creek School, when he was hit by a car on Champion St, Inspector Mike Coleman said.
Emergency services tried to revive the boy but could not do so.
The road was closed while police investigated the scene.
The boy's name has yet to be released.
