Another quake shakes Wellington

The largest in the recent swarm of earthquakes has been keenly felt in the centre of New Zealand, but also as far north as the Waikato and as far south as Canterbury.

The quake centred 20km east of Seddon in the Cook Strait and about 17km deep was strongly felt in Wellington, Marlborough and surrounding areas.

The quake, which struck at about 5.10pm on Sunday, follows a magnitude 5.7 on Friday and a 5.8 on Sunday morning.

Aftershocks are continuing.

There have been no reports of injuries, but there has been damage around the area.

Seddon has been hit particularly hard, with residents gathering in the community centre to stay safe.

One caller to NewstalkZB says their house has been damaged, with cracks in the foundations, and the chimney toppling over.

Civil Defence are telling residents to check on neighbours, and to stick together.

Power was out to around 3500 people, with reports of powerlines falling over, but has since been restored to Karori.

The fire service has cordoned off parts of Wellington's Civic Square as water began gushing from a quake-damaged building.

Emergency services around central New Zealand are currently attending call-outs.

No tsunami warning has been issued.

Flights to and from Wellington have been postponed. Two flights have been cancelled. The airport will be closed until around 7pm.

It is believed that a train has been stopped on its tracks near Petone.

More to come.
